Openreach has issued a final warning that only three months remain before old copper landlines are permanently disconnected across the UK. The permanent decommissioning of the Public Switched Telephone Network is set to take place, and officials have confirmed the deadline will not be extended under any circumstances. Approximately one million copper-based lines remain active, including 300,000 in business premises, representing some of the most complex connections to migrate. Beyond standard household voice calls, a wide variety of critical infrastructure still relies heavily on this legacy analogue technology. Affected systems include payment terminals and EPOS cash handling equipment, lift emergency telephones, fire alarm communication panels, security monitoring systems, and building access controls such as automated gates and door entry units. Unmigrated systems face the risk of sudden disruption, which could potentially trigger commercial building closures and supply chain delays. James Lilley, Director of All-IP at Openreach, highlighted that organizations delaying action are complicating their own transitions, noting that the remaining connections require careful planning, supplier coordination, and thorough testing. Openreach has introduced migration incentives, such as discounted connections for providers upgrading customers to digital alternatives. Those who fail to transition in time may be automatically moved to a temporary, limited, and more expensive fallback service designed strictly for essential emergency calls. Fuente: WalesOnline
