Nottingham City Council has stated that it has exhausted all legal powers available to prevent dangerous trespassing at the former Debenhams building in Old Market Square. The local authority and Nottinghamshire Police are placing the responsibility firmly on the site's owners following an incident where four youths were photographed on the roof, with some hanging their legs over the edge. This follows similar trespassing events that occurred in previous months. Longmead Capital, the London-based management firm for owners Long Row Properties Limited, has not provided a comment regarding the latest security breach. Police have identified additional access points, noting that the roof remains a significant vulnerability despite previous promises by management to secure the property. Authorities warn that these reckless actions not only endanger the trespassers but also put people in the square below at serious risk, while diverting vital emergency services from other critical situations. Law enforcement is currently exploring youth injunctions for those identified in the incident, though police emphasize that families bear ultimate responsibility. The council continues to enforce a closure order and a Public Spaces Protection Order, which makes unauthorized entry a serious offense carrying potential prosecution and hefty fines. The prominent building has remained vacant since the department store shut down in May 2021, with no formal planning applications submitted for its future redevelopment.
