A Salem police officer has been arrested and charged following a family dispute over laundry inside a shared home. According to court records, Sean Whitaker faces one felony count of assault and battery on a person aged sixty or older. Police responded to the residence after a reported domestic disturbance, where the seventy-three-year-old mother-in-law stated through a translator that Whitaker pushed her backward during an argument about removing clothes from the dryer. The victim sustained injuries to her elbow and wrist area and sought treatment at a local hospital. While Whitaker denied physical contact and claimed the woman struck him first, he was arraigned in Salem District Court, where he pleaded not guilty and was released on personal recognizance with strict conditions to stay away from the victim and surrender all weapons. Following the arrest, the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission suspended his law enforcement certification. He is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing.
