The latest monthly ranking of the top fifty news websites in the UK, based on data from Ipsos Iris, reveals that thirty-eight of these major brands experienced year-on-year audience declines in September. Publications owned by Reach suffered the four worst-hit audience drops annually, a period that follows the introduction of paywalls for premium content and broader industry-wide Google traffic declines. Chronicle Live recorded the steepest annual fall, down 45.8%, followed by the Daily Record, Birmingham Live, and the Manchester Evening News. Despite the widespread downturn, twelve brands managed to grow their audience compared to the previous year. Newsquest's Oxford Mail led the annual growth metrics with a 107.9% increase, followed by Screenrant and Huffpost. Huffpost and Kent Online also entered the top fifty rankings for the first time, replacing the Irish Mirror and India Times. In terms of month-on-month performance, Reuters led audience growth, while celebrity magazine People recorded significant traffic declines. Among the top ten major publishers, the BBC was the sole brand to achieve year-on-year audience growth, whereas Sky News faced declines across both monthly and yearly measures.
